30 Second Short (well 42 seconds to be exact)

Here is my thirty second short that I have been working on for several weeks. After a string of all nighters it is finally done. I'll post progress and behind the scenes of the short at another time.

(I'm working on figuring out how to load a higher res video so it can be viewed in a larger window and maintain integrity.)

So this week I have my leaf test that I have completed along with a couple of pictures as to how I accomplish my animations each week.

Here the camera set up I have (I'm waiting on getting an actual copy stand so it can be a more permanent fixture.)

Here are the drawings for this animation, it equals out to 384 frames ( = 192 drawings) All for a total of about 15 seconds of animation.

Well, I wasn't able to get a Thanksgiving comic done for today's post, so this will have to do. (I might be able to pull one out before the holiday but no promises.) It's been a hectic crazy week, I have been uncontrollably busy, so I dragged this one out from my reserves.

This was actually first drawn I believe two Thanksgivings ago, but now re-imaged to the finished style.

I have had an idea for this comic ever since my wife and I flew out of the Bob Hope Airport in Burbank where they actually had a flower bouquet vending machine. Who actually uses those?! Finally I figured out an instance where such a flower vending machine would come in handy.

Be-lated Halloween Post

Here is the Halloween post I was trying to get done in time for Halloween but other things kept coming up and personal time was eaten up first. I'm going to work on some Thanksgiving strips next, but in the mean time I have some other strips I have completed to post in between those. I am going to try and keep up postings for once a week, that's a cool more attainable then a strip daily or bi-weekly. - Oh and by the by I just got my wife's and I's laptops updated at a great place, if your in the bay area I highly recomend going to Fix That Mac in Berkerley Tyler did an awesome job with our laptops at a great price.

I didn't finish up the planned Halloween strip for today so I will post this one that I recently finished. When I first started drawing these comics I had in-visioned them to all be colored in with black and white tones, because I like to look of black and white pictures and wanted to incorporate that into the strip. maybe I'll just settle on some of them in the black and white look.

After a week of getting other things done, I am back to drawing again. Here is another revival of a past comic. It's kinda fun going back through all these old comics I have and tweaking them a little here and there so they sound better and look a lot better. Usually when I draw out a comic for the first time I draw it in a rough format so I have it down and can come back to it when I have more time to put the final coat of paint on it, so to speak.

100th Post!

WOW, I can't believe I've reached 100 posts. To celebrate this feat I am putting up a comic that I did just recently, but it's not just any comic, it's drawn and colored completely on the cintiq. I know I have mention how nice it is to draw on the cintiq, but it doesn't do it justice. It's not quite the same as drawing on paper because you don't have the feel of the scrape of pen or pencil on paper, it has the fluid movement similar to a marker coloring on grease. Some of the best aspects of drawing on the cintiq is the ability to re-size and move different selections and use layers, those are the tools that I love being able to use among many more that I use.

Here is the finished black and white image I did, before coloring. This is the first time I added in the spacer bars to break up each panel. It's been a debate that I have had with myself of whether to have spacer bars or not, this one I felt like it really needed them to help distinguish between the panels.

Here is the colored version. Coloring this was really easy and involving. Once I started it, it was hard to tear me away from it I just wanted to keep going and do more an more (even now that i am done I look at it and want to do more.) I'm not super happy how the fog turned out but it works and looks good enough for now.

So the actual idea for this came from a postcard ad from American Eagle. The postcard featured a guy and a girl walking through the falling snow looking like quite the perfect couple. My thought process first took me to think well what if its their first date, it went further to think, well you know that the guy would be completely nervous and try to impress her with knowledge and big words. A few more minutes of hammering out idea's and imaging the panels in my mind, and it was done.

This is an older comic, not the new story I've been talking about. I have two panels of the new one done and loaded onto the computer but I don't have the rest of the story drawn out yet, so I don't want to have two of them on and not post the other ones for a while. Instead I have uploaded a bunch of older ones to fill in the time until the new ones are put up. I didn't do this earlier because a lot of some of my older stuff was around holidays and we were in summer, I don't like to read holiday comics when it not near the holiday.
This one is to make fun of the measures people will go to create holiday appeal. Totally not a true story, though it would be really awesome if it were.

Everywhere in Vegas and the surrounding areas there are slot machines, so I thought it would be funny if they had you play the slots to get into the bathroom. As you can see by the date in the bottom of this comic, I did this one about three years ago add a week or so.

This is one of a series inspired by a trip to Vegas with some of my friends for the Las Vegas 100th birthday party. We won tickets to see Weezer and Red Hot Chili Peppers. This was all of ours first time in Las Vegas when we were 21, so of course we knew we were going to have fun. Needless to say I think I spent two dollars on roulette and a dollar on the nickel slots and called it quits.

This idea was inspired from an actual event which means, part of it really happened. Before I was born and after my Grandma Thelin died, my Grandpa Thelin was dating this real witch of a woman who had already buried three or so other husbands gaining a profit. My dad was trying to support my grandfather and invited them both over for dinner with my family, in which she completely insulted every kid and the family. In retaliation my dad had my oldest brother round up the plates after dinner and then proceeded to have our Saint Bernard Lab mix Muzzy lick all the plates clean and put them back in the cupboards. This lady then completely changed her tone and left as soon as she could. After the fiasco my mom then had my dad wash every dish in the kitchen for fear of what any of the licked dishes may have touched.

Ode to Fourth of July, I drew this back in 04' so uh speed ahead four years and its still funny. The inspiration for this came from one of my favorite comics Foxtrot, the dad would always empty about two bottles of lighter fluid into the grill then light it. Now of course that was a charcoal grill, so I added the gas grill for extra comedic humor.

I drew this around Halloween if you couldn't tell by the storyline. I have always like that there was an English book called the Thesaurus, it always sounded like it should have been some kind of dinosaur, thus this comic is spawned. Allison gets bugged about this one because she says there should be a coma in the "the thesaurus, scourge of the Jurassic period." part. "I say dang it Jim, I'm a fashion designer not an English major." Allison likes to go by the name Jim.

White Men Can't Jump

So this idea comes from a scene in the movie called White Men Can't Jump. In the scene its the middle of the night and a couple is laying in bed and the woman remarks how she is thirsty and the male goes and gets her a glass of water; she then replies she doesn't want a glass of water she wants to talk about how she is thirsty, if she wanted a glass of water she could have gotten it herself. This shows that men just want to fix things while women just want to talk about how it makes them feel.

So this came from me reading a barrel of detective novels recently. I think I pretty much nailed how to draw Allison in this one, so that is good. For a more riveting read, while reading the part for the "Detective" read it in a 1950's PI voice or 1930's gangster voice.

I actually drew this on Easter, but I waited the four weeks it states in the comic before I posted it. The idea behind this one came when we went to our friends place in Santa Barbara. We brought an 18count package of eggs to dye and they had bought a twelve count package to dye, so we had 30 dyed eggs. Our friend also told us a story about how her parents would hide the eggs every year but wouldn't find them all on that day, they would find them through out the next few months.

The story behind this comic comes from when Allison and I were driving around San Jose one time we saw this guy carrying his bike around. Allison with her window down not thinking just said "bikes are for riding." so not to look like the wimp who's woman yells things at people and just sit idly by, I thought fast and interjected the last phrase "dweedle-nose." At this point she just laughed at me for coming up with such a wussy put down.

Crossword Puzzle

I came up with this idea, from riding the train to San Francisco everyday when I was in school. I would collect what ever newspapers I could from people who would get off the train before me, and I would go straight to the crossword puzzles. what ever words I couldn't guess I would either call or text my friends to see if they knew anything. I then reversed the roles around in my head to see what it was like for them to get these random calls and texts, and I thought it was pretty funny. So can any of you name items that are being asked?

Play Ball

So this was drawn right after a baseball game that Allison and I went to at SJSU. It was there realized that we would always go to baseball games and if anyone would ask we would say "Yeah lets go baseball is cool". After the first or second inning though we would remember "Wait a minute we don't really like baseball, we just like going out" then we would wait restlessly the whole rest of the innings for it to end so we could go do something else.

So this idea came right after I finished the previous comic. I thought what else could I try to fabricate out of household materials. (I was also watching a lot of MacGyver at the time.) Just a few hints on what the pencil fading is showing: the stockpots of water are on hot plates, and there is a beach umbrella that is catching all the steam.

This idea came from when I went to Vegas for the first time after I turned 21. I just thought it was such a naive and novel idea. If you look to the far right you can see the name of the casino as Roy & Al's Casino, which is a play off of Jame Bond's Casino Royal.

This comic deals with the fact that I have a huge fear of large bodies of water, or bodies of water in general. I do love the idea of surfing though, so its a horrible vicious circle. I had this idea when I was invited to a beach party and I thought about what I would do at a party on the beach since I don't like water.

Sorry about a lag in the daily posts, but due to being on vacation and not around any internet I was forced to abandon the daily posts. They are back however and will keep airing so stay tuned.The idea behind this comic came from when my wife and I went bed shopping, and we found this bed that was unbelievably comfortable. As circumstance would have it the bed was way out of our price range and we got a hand-me-down, but I at least got this comic out of it. Coincidentally Sleep-E-Time is the name of a motel I would stay in when I would go to a little town called Enterprise.
